Catamarca is a hidden gem for those who are passionate about knowing the remains of ancient cultures. All over the province there are more than 800 sites of indigenous cultures that bring us the voices of these ancient people that inhabited here for thousands of years. Incredible cave paintings, complete drywall stone villages that show their particular organization, almost inaccessible military fortresses watching from high altitude the valleys and chasms.
In the Central Valley, the Aguada culture ( which dominated the region from 300 AD to 1200 AD) has left signs of their rich and complex development, their worldviews and their organization.
Shamanic sites like the cave of La Candelaria and La Tunita stone eaves, full of amazing cave paintings, are worthy of visits, leaving La Aguada in the morning and returning in the afternoon.
The Pucara of Aconquija is a fortified military site from the Inca Empire time. It is located on top of a mountain, surrounded by a stone wall 3 kilometers long. To reach there we have to walk for about 1 hour (climb the slopes of the mountains), and nearly 40 minutes to return. For this visit, we have to leave La Aguada in the morning, returning in the afternoon.
The Pueblo Perdido de la Quebrada ("Lost Village" of the Ravine) allows you to go round and know how was a village of the people of the Aguada Culture, how was their organization and how was their day to day living.
The Adán Quiroga Museum shows an amazing collection of the most representative of the highly elaborate pottery of the Aguada Culture. History, culture and art of great depth in pieces of highly detailed and rich imagery processing.
The Central Valley has an inconceivable landscape for those who imagine Catamarca without really knowing it. Desert landscapes, spectacular but very demanding, certainly exist in other regions of the province. But our region is framed by the green mountains of the Ambato Chain and the also green giant walls of the Ancasti Chain.
The horseback rides are organized by Mario Guardo, who lives in Coneta, our nearest village.
He is a horse passionate: he breeds polo ponies; he plays polo in his own polo field sited at the foot of the mountains, and knows every trail by each slope and ravines.
A young guide, born and raised in these mountains, works with us: Marcelo Arroyo is a physical education teacher who also specializes in mountaineering and rappelling.
Marcelo has designed and prepared beautiful trails across mountains and ravines.
